BBC’s List of Bizarre Domain Names

It is no secret that media companies buy domain names of their shows. Some of them are real pippers as is indicated by a list of 154 such domain names that were released by the BBC this week. More information on the domain names themselves are listed in the original Telegraph article here, but those mentioned include www.desperaterussianhousewives.co.uk, www.watchagrownmanrot.co.uk, www.singlessos.co.uk and www.bestmurders.co.uk. I know of one domain name investor who purchased a great domain name and one year later a television show in the U.S. unveiled a program by the very same name. Needless to...

Domains – Sheikh What ICANN Gave You

The ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, is the first Arab leader to use non-Latin characters in the titles of web addresses, which became available earlier this month. Apparently the Sheikh is a bit of a social media maven and was quick to act on ICANN”s introduction of the new domains. From a statement posted by the media office of the government of Dubai, ““This remarkable achievement reflects His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum’s keenness to promote the Arabic language, and reaffirms the United Arab Emirates’ deep-rooted Arab identity.” Domainers are...

Domainers Add Caution to Success Formula

An excellent article from the Miami Herald about some domainers that have probably lost millions of dollars collectively in the .mobi craze of a few years ago should act as the ultimate cuationary tale for those looking to make a few bucks from the buying and selling of domain names. Many domainers at the time who were interested in .mobi, fully expected that those domain names would be on par in terms of value as .com’s in the long as .com’s bought hundreds (in the case of the domainer in the article around 500 .mobi’s). The problem is that the demand has not really been there for...

Via Network World, nearly nine in ten (87 percent) of UK businesses are in favor of one or two letter domain names according to the UK domain registry Nominet. Those short domain names are in high demand so Nominet’s Policy Advisory Board would host a consultation period which will allow UK companies to comment on how domains should be made available. Current Nominet rules prevent the use of single-character domain names, while two-character domain names must comprise a letter and a number. UK businesses have until June 8 to complete Nominet’s online...

Cybersquatters Waiting for .CO Release? Not.

Research and Marketers seems to be preying on the fears of big brands with the release of an audio conference titled “The Instant Impact of Colombia Opening Up Registration of .co Domain Names on IP Lawyers and Protecting Your Clients from Cybersquatters.” If that’s not the most terrifying bit of linkbait then I’m not sure what is. The 60 minute webinar addresses the impact of Colombia removing the restrictions for registration of third-level domain names, starting to offer second-level registration directly under .co, starting to market .co as a generic top-level domain, and...
